In order to assist Delhi in coping with the water scarcity, the Supreme Court has ordered the Himachal Pradesh government to release 137 cusecs of excess water on Friday.

The administration of Himachal Pradesh has consented to discharge excess water, according to the highest court. It instructed the government of Haryana to make it easier for water to be released through the Wazirabad barrage.

The Himachal government was ordered by the court to release the water after giving Haryana advance notice.

The Delhi government was also forewarned by the Supreme Court not to waste water.

The Delhi administration filed a request for an increased water supply from nearby states including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh with the Supreme Court last week.

The nation’s capital is currently experiencing a catastrophic lack of water amid intense heat.

In the midst of the crisis, the Delhi government, led by the AAP, has implemented strict measures to prevent water waste. A fine of ₹2,000 has been imposed “on anyone found wasting water.”

Additionally, it instructed the authorities to cut off any “illegal water connections on commercial establishments or construction sites.”

The Yamuna river’s water level dropped last month, according to Delhi Water Minister Atishi, and the temperature raised water consumption. The Wazirabad Pond’s water level was 674.5 feet last year, she added, but despite repeated requests, only 671 feet of water had been released.

In order to solve the water scarcity, the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) was directed by the court to convene an urgent meeting on Monday.

An IAS officer oversaw the establishment of a central control room by the AAP government on May 30. Additionally, Atishi disclosed that locals might call a helpline at (1916) to request water tankers.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, has pleaded with the BJP to speak with its counterparts in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana before his return to Tihar Jail on June 2.

The people of Delhi will be extremely grateful to the BJP for taking this move if it manages to secure some water for the city for a month by speaking with the governments of UP and Haryana. Nobody can control the intense heat like this. However, is it possible for us to relieve the people of this if we cooperate?” On X, Kejriwal had posted.
