Apple is to boost its Siri voice assistant and operating systems with OpenAI’s ChatGPT as it seeks to catch up in the AI race.

At its annual developers conference on Monday, the iPhone maker unveiled several new features, including the makeover of Siri.
It is a component of the “Apple Intelligence” system, a new personalized AI system designed to make using Apple products easier for users.
Through a collaboration with developer OpenAI, ChatGPT will be accessible via updates to its Mac and iPhone operating systems.
Other tools, including text and content generation, can also be enhanced with ChatGPT. In the fall, the test version will be made accessible.
Head of Apple, Tim Cook, declared that the move will take the company’s products “to new heights” when he launched the Worldwide Developers Conference at the Cupertino, California headquarters of the computer giant.

What is AI and how does it work?

The news was not well received by everyone. Tesla and Twitter/X CEO Elon Musk vowed to outlaw iPhone use at his companies for “data security” reasons.

Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI,” Musk stated on X. “They’re selling you down the river.”

Due to competitors’ quick ascent to prominence and their use of AI technology, Apple has been under pressure to add further AI features to its devices.

Early in June, Nvidia surpassed Apple once more for the title of most valuable business in the world, after Microsoft had snatched it in January.

While Apple’s new personal AI system “should help placate nervous investors,” according to Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, the company’s ChatGPT integration may expose and exacerbate deeper issues.

“Arguably this sees Apple admitting its limitations given ChatGPT will kick in at a point where Siri is no longer able to help a user,” according to the BBC.

Among the plethora of AI products that IT companies have developed in recent months, Apple has been conspicuously absent.

In 2023, Mr. Cook assured investors that the business would handle technology carefully. Those ideas were ultimately unveiled on Monday.

What is ‘Apple Intelligence‘?

“Apple Intelligence” is not a stand-alone product or software.

Whether it’s a writing assistant polishing your message drafts or your diary figuring out the best route to your next meeting, it will be integrated into every app and Apple product users use.

It is comparable to Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant in that regard, however activation is free of charge.

Siri, the voice assistant that Apple purchased in 2010, has been updated with a chattier appearance and additional features to make it easier for users to move between apps and devices.

During Monday’s speech, Apple was eager to emphasize the security of Apple Intelligence.

While more complex operations needing more processing power will be transferred to the cloud, no data will be stored there, according to the statement, some processing will be done on the device itself.

Customers who pay higher fees for Apple’s privacy assurances will need to know this.

According to Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, the technology “puts powerful generative models right at the core of your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.”

“It draws on your personal context to give you intelligence that’s most helpful and relevant for you, and it protects your privacy at every step.”

What does OpenAI (Chatgpt) and Apple deal mean?

Although it was widely expected, Apple’s choice to incorporate OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology is noteworthy for a business that takes such great care to protect its own intellectual property.

Recently, Google and Microsoft have come under fire for mistakes made by their AI technologies. In May, the search engine giant removed a new feature when it produced incorrect results that went viral.

Due to concerns that third-party apps would not be secure, Apple also for years prohibited its users from downloading any software from sources other than the App Store. The company also only permitted the use of its own web browser, Safari.

Only when compelled by EU law did it change.
Is it an indication that ChatGPT is currently more competitive than even Apple?

If so, it provides valuable insight into the capabilities of OpenAI, the dominant AI company.
The company did mention integrating other items in the future, but it did not specify which ones.

The UK will be able to purchase Apple’s mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro, starting on July 12. In the US, it has been accessible since February.
Monday’s announcement of more new features includes:

  • use satellite to deliver texts
  • arranging for communications to be sent later
  • using head gestures to operate AirPods Pro—nodding to indicate yes, shaking to indicate no
  • a password-specific software that works on several devices
  • the option to conceal specific apps or keep them hidden behind passcodes or Face ID.
